One non-nursing theory that may be beneficial when developing patient care plans is Bandura’s conception of the Self-efficacy construct. (Bandura, 1977) “Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments.” (Forsyth & Carey, 2009) This theory conceptualizes that a person’s self-efficacy is influenced by psychological factors, thus affecting whether coping strategies will be initiated, the amount of effort exerted towards a goal, and how long a person is willing to persevere in the face of aversion. The belief that one can be successful in reaching a goal significantly improves the likelihood of success according to this model. This theory may be applied to the framework of nursing practice when considering the mental and emotional aspects of patient care. As nurses, we are looked at for answers and encouragement. Our encouragement is valuable to the success of our patients and may even aid in them meeting their treatment goals. As an RN that strives to pursue an integrated approach to patient care, this would be an excellent theory to encourage positive outcomes. Applying this theory to drug and alcohol treatment allows encouraging and uplifting of my patients and lets them know they are not alone and are capable of success.
